How to use this puppy weight calculator

Fill the form on the left. The result shows on the right when you tap the button. Here is what each box means and what to put in it.

What to add in each box

Breed

Pick your puppy's breed from the list. If your puppy is a mix, or the breed is not on the list, pick the "Other" option that matches the size you expect: Toy, Small, Medium, Large or Giant.

Weight

Type your puppy's weight today, like 10 or 4.5. Then pick lb, oz, kg or g next to the box. Use oz or g for very small puppies. For the best result, weigh your puppy in the last few days.

Birth date

Pick the day your puppy was born. If you do not know the exact day, pick your best guess. The tool works for puppies from 2 weeks old up to 2 years old.

Gender

Pick Male or Female. In most breeds, males grow a little bigger than females, so this changes the result a bit.

More tools

Use the menu above the form to switch tools, or open each one on its own page: Puppy Feeding Calculator, Dog Calorie Calculator, Dog Age Calculator and Healthy Dog Weight Calculator. Each tool gives its own result, graph and chart that you can download or share.

What to add in each box

Breed

Pick your puppy's breed. We use it to guess how fast your puppy will grow, so the food chart for the coming months is closer to real life. For a mix, pick the "Other" size that is closest.

Weight

Type your puppy's weight today and pick lb, oz, kg or g. Food needs depend on weight more than anything else, so weigh your puppy just before you start.

Birth date

Pick the day your puppy was born. Young puppies need more calories for each pound they weigh than older puppies, so the age changes the answer.

Gender

Pick Male or Female. It helps guess the adult size, which is used in the food chart.

Calories in 1 cup

Look at your dog food bag and find the calories (kcal) in one cup. Most dog foods have 300 to 450. Type that number so we can show cups and not only calories. If the bag does not show it, check the brand's website.

Reading your result

You will see the calories a day, how many meals to feed, and about how many cups. The graph shows how the daily need grows with your puppy. Use it to double check the amount on the bag, and ask your vet before big changes.

How to use this dog calorie calculator

Wondering how many calories your dog should eat? Add the weight and pick the way of life that fits your dog, and the tool shows the calories and cups for a day.

Weight

Type your dog's weight and pick lb, oz, kg or g. Use a weight from the last few days. If your dog is overweight, use the weight your vet wants your dog to reach.

Which one fits your dog best

Pick the choice that matches your dog: adult neutered or spayed, adult not neutered, less active, weight loss plan, active, or hard working. Each choice uses a different calorie level, so pick the closest one.

Calories in 1 cup

Find the calories (kcal) in one cup on your dog food bag. Most dog foods have 300 to 450. We use it to turn calories into cups.

Reading your result

You will see the calories a day, a safe range, and about how many cups to feed. We also show how many calories can come from treats, and a chart for every life stage. Change the food slowly and watch your dog's weight.

How to use this dog age calculator

Want to turn dog years into human years? Pick the birth date and the size of your dog, and the tool shows the human age and the life stage.

What to add in each box

Birth date

Pick the day your dog was born. If you do not know it, use your best guess. Your vet can also tell you a rough age.

How big is your dog

Pick the size group: small is under 25 lb, medium is 25 to 50 lb, large is 50 to 90 lb, and giant is over 90 lb. Big dogs age faster than small dogs, so the size changes the human age.

Reading your result

You will see the age in human years, the life stage (puppy, young adult, adult or senior), and a chart of dog years against human years. These are averages, so your dog may be a little different.

What to add in each box

Breed

Pick your dog's breed. If your dog is a mix, pick the "Other" option closest to the size of your dog. This tool is made for adult dogs, 1 year and older.

Weight

Type your dog's weight and pick lb, oz, kg or g. A big bathroom scale works well: weigh yourself holding your dog, then weigh yourself alone, and take one from the other.

Gender

Pick Male or Female. Males are often a little heavier than females, so the healthy range is different.

Reading your result

You will see if your dog is underweight, healthy or overweight, with a gauge and a chart of weight zones. Also feel your dog's ribs at home: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat. If you are worried, ask your vet.

How Big Will My Puppy Get?

Almost every new puppy owner asks this question. A tiny ball of fur today can be a very big dog next year, and it helps to know early. It tells you how much food to buy, what size bed and crate you need, and if your car and home have enough room.

This puppy weight calculator gives you a clear guess. You add the breed, your puppy's weight and its age, and the tool shows how heavy your dog will be when fully grown.

How the Puppy Weight Calculator Works

The tool uses three things: the size group of the breed, the age of your puppy, and the weight today.

Puppies of the same size group grow in a similar way. For example, a medium size dog at 12 weeks old has about one third of its full weight. If your puppy weighs 10 lb at that age, the full weight will be around 30 lb. We also look at the usual weight of the breed, so the answer stays sensible and does not jump too high or too low.

The result is a range, not one number. That is on purpose. No tool can know exactly how your puppy will grow, so a range is more honest and more useful.

Puppy Growth by Size Group

Small dogs grow fast and stop early. Big dogs grow slowly and keep growing for much longer. This table shows how much of the full weight a puppy usually has at each age.

Size groupAdult weight8 weeks12 weeks26 weeks36 weeks52 weeks
ToyUnder 10 lb 30% 43% 80% 92% 99%
Small10 to 25 lb 24% 38% 76% 90% 98%
Medium25 to 50 lb 20% 33% 72% 87% 97%
Large50 to 90 lb 16% 27% 64% 80% 87%
GiantOver 90 lb 13% 22% 56% 72% 87%

Use the table as a quick guide. A medium size puppy at 26 weeks (about 6 months) has around 72% of its full weight, while a giant puppy at the same age has only about 56%.

How to Weigh Your Puppy at Home

You do not need special tools. These easy steps work well:

  1. For a small puppy, use a kitchen scale and a small box or bowl. Remove the weight of the box.
  2. For a bigger puppy, stand on a bathroom scale with your puppy in your arms. Then weigh yourself alone and take that number away.
  3. Weigh at the same time of the day, ideally before a meal.
  4. Write the number down. Weigh again every 2 weeks.

A small mistake in weight can change the result, so try to be as exact as you can.

Puppy Growth Stages

8 to 16 weeks

This is when puppies grow the fastest. Your puppy can gain weight almost every week. Feed a good puppy food and keep up with vet visits. Our puppy feeding calculator shows the calories, meals and cups that fit your puppy's weight and age.

4 to 6 months

Growth is still quick, but it starts to slow down in small breeds. Your puppy may look long and thin for a while. This is normal.

6 to 12 months

Small and medium dogs are close to their full size. Big dogs keep gaining, but slower. Many owners feel their puppy grew in sudden jumps in this time.

After 1 year

Most dogs are almost done. Large and giant breeds can still fill out and add muscle until they are 18 to 24 months old. Once your dog is grown, our dog calorie calculator shows how many calories to feed each day, and the dog age calculator turns your dog's age into human years.

What Changes How Big a Puppy Gets

  • Breed and parents: This matters the most. If you can find the weight of the parents, it is a very good clue.
  • Gender: Males are often a little bigger than females.
  • Food: Good food helps a puppy grow in a healthy way. Too much food makes a puppy fat, not taller.
  • Spay or neuter age: Dogs fixed early can grow a bit taller and heavier.
  • Health: Worms or other health problems can slow down growth.

Is My Puppy Too Light or Too Heavy?

Weight is only one part of the picture. A simple check at home is also useful. You should be able to feel your puppy's ribs under a thin layer of fat, but not see them clearly. When you look from above, you should see a small waist behind the ribs. If you cannot feel the ribs at all, your puppy may be too heavy. If the ribs and hip bones stick out, your puppy may be too thin. For a grown dog, the healthy dog weight calculator shows if the weight is in the usual range for the breed.

When to Talk to Your Vet

Please call your vet if your puppy:

  • loses weight or does not gain weight for 3 to 4 weeks
  • has a swollen belly, or throws up often
  • does not want to eat or looks very tired
  • is much bigger or smaller than other puppies of the same breed and age

Tips to Get the Best Result

  • Use a weight from the last few days.
  • Enter the exact birth date if you know it.
  • Pick the right breed. For a mix, pick the size you think is closest.
  • Check again every month. The guess gets better as your puppy grows.

Remember, this tool gives a helpful guess. Every puppy is different, and your vet is the best person to tell you if your puppy is growing well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this puppy weight calculator?

It gives a good guess, not a promise. A puppy older than 6 months is usually close to the result, and the range we show gets smaller as your puppy grows. Very young puppies can still grow in different ways, so their range is wider.

How does the calculator guess my puppy's adult weight?

It looks at your puppy's breed, age and weight today. Puppies of the same size group grow in a similar pattern, so we check how much of the full weight a puppy usually has at that age. Then we work out the full weight and compare it with the usual weight of the breed.

When will my puppy stop growing?

Small dogs are often full size by 10 to 12 months. Medium dogs take about a year or a little more. Large dogs can take 18 months, and giant dogs can keep growing until they are 2 years old. Your result shows the age for your puppy's size group.

Can I use it for a mixed breed puppy?

Yes. Pick the "Other" option that is closest to the size you expect your puppy to be. If you know one parent, use that parent's weight as a guide. The graph will update and show a wider range for mixed breeds.

Does spaying or neutering change adult weight?

It can a little. Dogs that are spayed or neutered while they are still growing may grow a bit taller and heavier, mostly in bigger breeds. This calculator does not change the result for spaying or neutering, so you can leave it out.

My puppy weighs more or less than the usual weight. Should I worry?

Not right away. Puppies grow in jumps, and some are just bigger or smaller than others. If your puppy loses weight, stops gaining weight for a few weeks, or looks too thin or too round, talk to your vet.

What is the best age to use the calculator?

Any age from 2 weeks up to 2 years works. The guess is best when your puppy is between 12 weeks and 6 months old. Check again every month and compare the results.

Can I enter the weight in kilograms?

Yes. Next to the weight box you can pick lb, oz, kg or g. Your result will show in pounds or kilograms, and also in the other one.

Do you save my puppy's details?

No. Everything is worked out in your own browser. We do not send your puppy's details to our server. Your last entry is only kept on your own device so it is easy to come back.
