What Is a Healthy Weight for a Dog?
There is no single healthy weight for all dogs. A Chihuahua may weigh 5 lb and a Great Dane may weigh over 150 lb, and both can be healthy. Each breed has a usual weight range for adult males and females, and the best weight for your dog is often inside that range.
This healthy dog weight calculator compares your dog's weight with the usual range for its breed and gender. It also shows how much weight to gain or lose to get into the range.
How the Healthy Dog Weight Calculator Works
You pick the breed and gender and add the weight. The tool then checks where your dog sits:
- Inside the range: your dog's weight is normal for the breed.
- Up to 10% above: a little above the range.
- 10% to 20% above: your dog is carrying extra weight.
- More than 20% above: your dog is well above the range, and it is a good idea to talk to your vet.
- Below the range: a little low, or very low if it is more than 10% under.
The result shows a gauge so you can see the zones at a glance, and a table with the weights for every zone.
A Weight Range Is Not the Whole Story
Breed ranges are averages. A strong, muscular dog may weigh more and still be healthy, and a light framed dog may weigh less. Mixed breed dogs can also be quite different from the "Other" size you pick. This is why you should use the result together with a body check at home, and with your vet's words.
How to Check Your Dog's Body at Home
- Ribs: You should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat, like the back of your hand. If you have to press hard to find them, your dog may be heavy.
- Waist: Look from above. You should see a small waist behind the ribs.
- Belly: From the side, the belly should go up a little toward the back legs, not hang down.
Why a Healthy Weight Matters
Extra weight puts more load on joints, and can make it harder for a dog to run, jump and play. Dogs that stay in a healthy weight range often stay active for longer. A dog that is too thin can also have health problems, so both sides are worth watching.
Simple Steps If Your Dog Is Above the Range
- Ask your vet first. Some health problems can cause weight gain.
- Measure meals with a cup or scale, and do not feed straight from the bag.
- Keep treats small and under 10% of the daily calories.
- Add a short walk each day, and make it a little longer every week.
- Weigh your dog every 2 weeks. Slow and steady weight loss is safer than fast loss.
Not sure how much to feed? Our dog calorie calculator shows the calories for a day. If your dog is under 1 year old, use the puppy feeding calculator instead, because puppies need more food as they grow.
Weight Changes With Age
As dogs get older, they move less and often gain weight, or sometimes lose it. Check the weight a few times a year. If you want to know which life stage your dog is in, try our dog age calculator.
When to Talk to Your Vet
Please talk to your vet if your dog gains or loses weight fast, does not want to eat, drinks a lot more than normal, or looks bloated. This tool is a general guide and cannot say if your dog is healthy. Only your vet can do that.
